The Uganda National Oil Company (UNOC) has revealed that its first consignment of petroleum products is on the way to Uganda as it starts fulfilling its new mandate as the sole importer of fuel products into the country.
According to the company, the shipment comprises 78 million litres of petrol and 65,000 tons of diesel.
“As our new mandate as the sole importers of fuel products officially kicks in, the excitement is palpable. The first shipment, carrying a remarkable 78 million litres of Petrol and 65,000 tons of Diesel, is a few hours away from Mombasa. From there, it will be transported to Uganda, symbolizing the beginning of a new era of energy independence for our nation,” UNOC wrote on X on Tuesday.
Unoc Chief Corporate Affairs Officer Tony Otoa in an interview said the fuel is being carried in two vessels, which were expected to dock by Tuesday evening.
“This will continue to ensure stability in fuel supply to the country,” he said.
The shipment will be delivered through the Kipevu Oil Terminal 2 (KOT2) and then transported to Uganda using Kenya Pipeline Company (KPC) facilities.
President Yoweri Museveni assented to the amended Petroleum Supply Amendment Act in November 2023, giving monopoly powers to UNOC to import fuel into Uganda and sell it to petroleum marketers.
Uganda National Oil Company (Unoc) has signed a deal with Vitol Bahrain to import the fuel products aimed at lowering pump prices below the current rates offered by dealers in Kenya.
