Opposition MPs have castigated Veronica Nanyondo, the Bukomansimbi District Woman legislator, for alleging that she was hoodwinked into signing the censure motion under the pretext of signing an attendance list for another Opposition meeting.
They said her move is intended to derail the exercise of censure motion aimed at recalling the four Commissioners over the Shs1.7Bn Service Award.
Leading the criticism was Joel Ssenyonyi, the Leader of the Opposition who wondered how Nanyondo could claim to have signed the attendance list for the Shadow Cabinet to which isn’t a member, further pointing out that the members of the Shadow Cabinet usually record their attendance in a book, not a piece of paper as alleged by Nanyondo.
“When I first saw that letter, I was disturbed and at first I thought the letter was fake because she didn’t attend the meeting and she isn’t supposed to be in the Shadow Cabinet meeting. Now if she says she signed an attendance list of a meeting she isn’t a member, so how did she sign the attendance list of a meeting she wasn’t supposed to attend. And in the shadow cabinet, our attendance is recorded in the book, we don’t sign on a piece of paper. Didn’t she read what she was signing or was she intimidated? I am not sure, I can’t speak on her behalf,” said Ssenyonyi.
Ssenyonyi also questioned Nanyondo’s literacy levels wondering why she never bothered to read the document before appending her signature noting, “Besides, the censure motion has a headline on top indicating this is a censure motion, I don’t know what the colleague is talking about. Perhaps she was intimidated after signing the censure motion, I can’t understand the matter. I can’t speak on her behalf perhaps later, she will speak for herself but what I can confirm is she isn’t member of the Shadow Cabinet and she wasn’t part of our meeting.”
Balimwezo Nsubuga (Nakawa East) expressed surprise at Nanyondo’s letter, describing her decision as unfortunate & warned that such actions are intended to derail the censure process.

“It is a surprise to me and it is very unfortunate that she has come out to withdraw her signature after the censure motion. We were in Cabinet & Cabinet is for Cabinet members not any other member. She came in basically to sign the censure motion and she appended a signature on the piece of paper that had the motion, so you can’t tell me she came to sign an attendance list on the meeting she wasn’t part,” he said.
“To me, I believe this is a mission to reduce the censure motion, it is a mission but I don’t know who but it must be someone trying to grow the trick to show the public that some MPs were signing things that they didn’t know, or some MPs were under duress,” he added.
On Tuesday, Theodore Ssekikubo (Lwemiyaga County) mocked MP Nanyondo for claiming she was hoodwinked into signing the censure motion.
“She has written to the Speaker as who? Why do you write to the Speaker in anticipation? That you were hoodwinked, that you were blind? Many MPs are becoming blind right now. Many MPs are getting lame and all excuses are going to be given. But we sympathize with you, now the country is seeing who is the problem in this country but for us fortunately, we have enough signatures but much more drama is going to appear and unfold, but those MPs who claim they are blind, they have their day of reckoning,” Ssekikubo added.
