The Uganda Police Force has opened up a new anti-stock theft unit at Lorengedwat Sub-county headquarters in Moroto District to curb the resurgent cattle rustling in Karamoja Sub region.
This comes following an increase in murders, cattle rustling, rape and shop break-ins, among others by armed Karimojong warriors.
Speaking at the opening ceremony last weekend, the police leadership assured the residents that their concerns would be addressed by the stock unit.
Mike Longole, the police spokesperson for Moroto area, said Lorengedwat has been a crossing point for cattle rustlers in the area.
He urged the area residents to cooperate with police in arresting the culprits
“As police, we are a community oriented force, and community safety and their property is our priority,” Mr Longole said.
“We request the community of Lorengedwat as a crossing point for cattle rustlers to cooperate with us by giving information which may lead to arrest of cattle rustlers and recovery of rustled animals from their area, they should avoid night hour movement to avoid entering ambushes laid for cattle cattle rustlers, observe the curfew hours,” he added.
Mr Longole warned local leaders against sabotaging their operations by cooperating with rustlers.
